Restaurant Extension and Renovation to Grade II Listed Public House

Status: Completed 2018

Client: Private

Type: Commercial

Photography: Richard Chivers

The Fox is a restaurant and public house in the village of Crawley, near Winchester, in Hampshire. The project includes a full scale refurbishment of a dilapidated and uninhabitable Grade II Listed building originating from the early 17th Century.

Working alongside Design Engine Architects, we have overseen the transformation of the existing building as well as the construction of a brand new extension. The intention of the establishment is that it will act as a destination for the surrounding area.

The design is based around sympathetically renovating the existing Grade II Listed property, bringing it to a suitable useable standard while celebrating and restoring many of its historical attributes. Alongside this, a new contemporary extension has been constructed that takes the form of a series of three articulated pitched roofs, reminiscent of rural and agricultural vernacular forms. These are arranged to provide a connection with the outdoors and bring forth the impression of a series of interconnected outbuildings around a number of walled courtyard spaces. These are dressed in a black stained timber cladding.

The project incorporates a bespoke bar area, two large dining rooms - one of which features vaulted ceilings and dual aspect glazing, a fully functioning commercial kitchen, outdoor terraces and wood-fired pizza oven, as well as five high-end ensuite bedrooms available to stay overnight.

This project is a collaboration between Design Engine, who undertook the early project stages, and Paul Cashin Architects, who are responsible for delivering the project.
